If You Want A Healthy Voice - Don't Smoke

25th September 2019

Voice Tip Series/Blog - 5

If you want a healthy voice, don't smoke. Or seriously reduce your habit.

There is lots of help available if you want to give up. Your local pharmacy is a great place to start.

There are lots of health reasons to not smoke and these are covered in a multitude of places, so here is just a little bit of information on what happens to your voice if you smoke.

The smoke passes through the vocal tract and vocal folds on its way to the lungs. This leads to dehydration and drying up of healthy mucous levels. This causes subsequent irritation and swelling of the vocal folds. A smoker's voice will be changed and its quality affected. A bit like a car that has never been oiled, I suppose.

It is very important to keep hydrated as our body needs the water/moisture in your system in order to ensure that your vocal tract is healthy and your vocal folds are nice and plump for optimum voicing.

If you would like to enhance your communication skills, get in touch if you would like more specific help. Throughout September 2019 I have spaces available at heavily discounted rates for those in teaching positions - give me a call to find out more!
